Understand first. Find your next step.

These short starting guides help you understand common sleep questions and find appropriate support. They provide general information and do not replace clinical assessment. References are listed at the end of each guide.

I cannot sleep: where do I start?

Trouble falling asleep, staying asleep and waking too early are different experiences.

Identify your hardest moment: bedtime, the middle of the night or early morning. Keep a diary of bedtimes, wake times, caffeine and how you feel during the day.

Keep a consistent wake time, allow a quiet wind-down and go to bed when sleepy. If sleep will not come, try a calm activity in dim light and return when sleepy.

If the problem lasts months or affects daily life, speak with a clinician. Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is often the first treatment for long-term insomnia. Do not start sleep-restriction treatment without professional guidance.

Sleep apnoea: signs and getting assessed

Snoring, breathing pauses and daytime sleepiness deserve assessment together.

Repeated breathing pauses, loud snoring, waking gasping and marked daytime sleepiness can occur with sleep apnoea. These signs do not establish a diagnosis. Ask a clinician about assessment and whether a sleep study is needed.

If diagnosed, continue your prescribed treatment. PAP/CPAP and other treatments are chosen after individual assessment. A body pillow or earplugs cannot treat sleep apnoea or replace a breathing device. Side sleeping may be advised for some people; it is not a substitute for treatment.

Note any breathing pauses a partner notices and daytime dozing before your appointment. Do not drive when sleepy.

My partner snores: is it only a noise problem?

Reducing the sound and assessing the cause are different tasks.

Snoring is common. Side sleeping and reducing evening alcohol may help some people. Breathing pauses, gasping or strong daytime sleepiness need clinical assessment for possible sleep apnoea.

Earplugs may reduce the noise heard by a partner; they do not address the cause of snoring or a breathing disorder. If the problem affects sleep or daily life, seek advice instead of relying only on masking the sound. Take notes about observed symptoms to the appointment.

I need to move my legs at night

Understanding an urge to move that becomes worse at rest.

Uncomfortable leg sensations and an urge to move, especially at rest in the evening, may relate to restless legs syndrome. Cramps and other conditions can cause similar complaints.

Gentle walking, stretching or a warm bath may provide temporary relief. If sleep is disrupted, speak with a clinician, who can assess medicines and factors such as iron deficiency. Do not start iron supplements without appropriate assessment and advice.

I sleep enough but still doze during the day

Feeling tired is different from repeatedly falling asleep unintentionally.

See a clinician if you repeatedly fall asleep during the day or sleepiness affects your life. Sleep disorders, medicines and other health conditions may need assessment; time in bed is not the only factor.

Note sleep times, unplanned dozing and medicines; do not stop prescribed medicines yourself. Do not drive or operate dangerous equipment while sleepy. Coffee, an open window or music cannot replace adequate rest.

My thoughts race when I go to bed

Making a little space to unwind on anxious evenings.

Writing down worries and separating tomorrow’s tasks before bed may help ease mental load. Add a quiet activity away from screens and focus on relaxing rather than forcing sleep immediately.

Seek professional support if anxiety or sleep difficulties affect daily life. Wind-down habits can support you, but they do not replace assessment or treatment for an anxiety disorder.

Should I take melatonin or sleeping pills?

There is no single supplement or dose suitable for everyone.

Melatonin is a hormone; “natural” does not mean risk-free. Long-term safety is uncertain and interactions with medicines are possible. Children, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and those taking regular medicines should particularly seek professional advice.

This library cannot set medicine or supplement doses. Discuss persistent insomnia and suitable treatment with a clinician first. Do not start, stop or change prescribed treatment based on this page.

Sleep paralysis: what is happening?

Brief inability to move while falling asleep or waking up.

During sleep paralysis, you may briefly be unable to move or speak as you fall asleep or wake. It can feel frightening but is usually harmless. Consistent sleep times and adequate rest may help.

See a clinician if it happens frequently, makes you afraid to sleep or leaves you persistently tired. Do not dismiss ongoing weakness when fully awake or severe breathing difficulty as sleep paralysis; urgent assessment may be needed.

Are nightmares and night terrors the same?

Distinguishing remembered bad dreams from episodes during sleep.

You may remember a nightmare after waking. During a night terror, a person may remain asleep and not remember the episode later; this can occur particularly in children.

A calm, regular bedtime routine and a diary of episodes can help. Keep the person safe during a night terror; do not try to force them awake. Seek health advice if episodes are frequent, risk injury or nightmares affect daily life.

Finding a comfortable sleep position in pregnancy

Comfort ideas and an important distinction for pregnancy sleep.

Finding a comfortable position can become harder as pregnancy progresses. NHS guidance recommends starting sleep on either side after 28 weeks. If you wake on your back, turn onto your side without panicking.

Pillow support around the bump or between the knees may improve comfort. A pillow cannot treat a pregnancy-related health problem. Speak with your midwife or obstetric clinician about persistent sleep difficulties, pain or other symptoms; individual medical advice takes priority.

Is a pillow suitable for a baby?

Adult sleep products should not be placed in a baby’s sleep space.

Place babies on their backs on a firm, flat sleep surface. Keep pillows, duvets, soft toys and sleep nests out of the cot. A baby’s own sleep space should be in the parents’ room for the first six months.

Adult body pillows such as the Moon Sleep Pillow are not infant sleep aids; do not place one in a baby’s cot. Ask a paediatric clinician about concerns with a baby’s sleep or breathing.

Teeth grinding at night and jaw pain

Do not assume a pillow is the cause or solution.

Sleep grinding or clenching may become noticeable through jaw pain, sensitive teeth or wear. Stress, some medicines and sleep problems can be associated with it.

See a dentist for jaw pain, tooth damage or grinding reported by a partner. An individually fitted mouth guard may be considered when appropriate. Buying a pillow or choosing an unassessed mouth device cannot replace dental evaluation.

Waking during perimenopause or menopause

Night sweats and hot flushes can affect sleep.

During perimenopause and menopause, hot flushes, night sweats or anxiety can make falling or staying asleep harder. Menopause is not the cause of every night waking.

Note when symptoms happen and their effect on sleep and daytime wellbeing. If daily life is affected, discuss treatment options with your primary care or gynaecology clinician. A comfortable bedroom may support rest; do not choose hormone treatment or supplements without advice.
