How to fit foam earplugs: a step-by-step guide

With clean hands, roll your foam earplug, gently pull your ear upwards and backwards to fit it, then hold it as the foam expands. Always follow your product's own instructions.

Before you begin

A good fit helps your earplug sit comfortably and supports sound reduction. These steps are for soft foam models. For other materials, follow the instructions supplied with that product.

Clean and dry your hands. Check the earplug for dirt, tears or changes such as no longer returning to its original shape. Replace a damaged earplug with a clean new one. Let the product instructions on the packaging guide you throughout use.

The CDC/NIOSH guide to soft foam earplugs describes three main steps: rolling the foam, pulling the ear and holding the plug while it expands. Follow the sequence below within that guidance.

Three fitting steps

  1. Roll. Roll the earplug between your fingers into a thin cylinder. Aim for a smooth, narrow shape along the foam body.
  2. Fit. With your opposite hand, gently pull the top of your ear upwards and backwards. Slowly insert the rolled earplug without forcing it.
  3. Hold. Hold the earplug in place with your finger while the foam expands again. Once it has settled, check your comfort. Follow your product's instructions for how long to wait.

Your two ears may not feel exactly the same. If one side fits easily and the other is difficult, remove the earplug and prepare it again instead of using force. If discomfort continues, remove it and take a break from use.

How can you check the fit?

Check that the earplug stays comfortably in place. For your first attempt, choose a clean setting and give yourself time to learn the steps. Remove the earplug if you feel pain.

NIOSH describes comparing sound with your hands cupped over your ears and then removed as one way to check the fit. If sound becomes much quieter when your hands cover your ears, you may need to check the fit again. This simple comparison is not a decibel measurement or a professional workplace fit test.

Check your comfort when you rest your head on a pillow too. If you feel pressure or pain, remove the earplug and take a break from use.

Small tips for comfortable use

  • Fit it after preparing: Insert the rolled earplug promptly with a calm, steady movement.
  • Be gentle: Follow the fitting steps to find a comfortable position without forcing it.
  • Check with clean hands: If you need to refit it after touching another surface, think about hand hygiene again.
  • Keep it personal: Use your own earplugs for hygiene.

Quick answers about use

How can earplugs support my sleep routine?

They help reduce sound and support a comfortable sleep experience. What you notice can vary with the fit, your ear shape and the sounds around you.

Will I hear my alarm?

Earplugs can make an alarm quieter too. Consider adding a vibrating or light-based alert to your wake-up plan. Keep your ears clear when you need to hear important sounds around you.

When should I take a break?

If you experience pain, irritation or another ear complaint, stop using the earplugs and consult a healthcare professional.
